WilmerHale is an international law firm with over 1,000 lawyers and a network of 12 offices worldwide that offers unparalleled legal representation across a comprehensive range of practice areas that are critical to the success of our clients. We practice at the very top of the legal profession and offer a cutting-edge blend of capabilities that enables us to handle deals and cases of any size and complexity.
We are committed to increasing diversity among our lawyers and staff. To foster the recruitment and retention of people of color, women and people of varying sexual orientations, we have established a firmwide Diversity Committee that includes representatives from firm leadership and lawyers from each of our three major US offices. Our goals are to ensure that all lawyers and staff have the opportunity to develop their talents fully; to create a firm whose composition more closely reflects that of our clients and the world in which we practice; and to promote greater diversity in the legal profession.
While we understand that a diverse legal profession is highly important, we also appreciate that without proper preparation most students find the law school experience overwhelming and extremely difficult to earn top grades. That is why WilmerHale decided to sponsor scholarships to Law Preview's law school prep course -- a program that some of our most successful lawyers took before they themselves entered law school.
WilmerHale Law Preview Scholarship Criteria
To be eligible to become a WilmerHale Law Preview Scholarship recipient, applicants must be (i) a member of a racial/ethnic/gender group which has been historically underrepresented in the legal profession or a member of the LGBT community; and (ii) enrolled to begin classes at Columbia Law School or UC Berkeley School of Law in the fall of 2013.
Applications will be accepted until the scholarship deadline. A selection panel will evaluate all completed applications, and scholarship recipients will be notified on a rolling basis.
If you plan to attend Columbia Law School, Georgetown University Law Center or UC Berkeley School of Law and meet the scholarship criteria, complete the online application before the scholarship deadline.
First year law school grades are critical because most large firms recruit law students during the fall semester of the 2L year. Consequently, first-year grades are a major factor for firms in deciding whether or not to hire candidates for their Summer Associate programs. When our Diversity Committee investigated ways that we could help make a difference in the lives of students who are heading to law school, we learned about Law Preview and that some of our own lawyers had attended the program and found it helpful in preparing for the challenges they would face in law school. This is why WilmerHale has decided to offer scholarships to the Law Preview class for diverse students who will be attending select law schools. Proper preparation can make a huge difference in a law student's academic performance and we are happy to play a part in helping students get off to a good start.
